Stephon Carter: Son of a Killer

It turns out accused cop killer Stephon Carter is the son of a killer.

Meet Willie Carter, left, who is serving time for killing Stephon's mother in Aiken just four months after Stephon was born.

Sonya Carter separated from Willie Carter while pregnant with Stephon in 1992. She was so afraid of Willie Carter that she abandoned her Aiken home and moved to Barnwell County. But in March 1993, he kidnapped his estranged wife from Aiken Technical College and shot her execution-style in the front seat of her own car, according to media accounts of his trial.

Her body was found a day later in the passenger seat of her car, which was parked on a dirt road off S.C. 39 in Williston. An autopsy revealed she was shot twice in the chest, once in the neck and once in the head with a .22-caliber revolver.

Willie Carter was sentenced to life in prison, but a Department of Corrections website lists his eligible parole date as March 2013.

After his mother's death, Stephon Carter was raised by his maternal grandparents, Sarah Jane Hickman and Samuel Hickman Sr., according to family members. He was 9 when Samuel Hickman died, leaving his grandmother as his sole guardian.

The Augusta Chronicle is reporting that Blackville Police Chief John Holston is a distant cousin of Stephon Carter. Chief Holston said the death of Stephon's mother at the hands of his dad may explain his current situation, but not excuse it.

SLED officials have issued warrants against Stephon Carter for Tuesday night's shooting death of Aiken Officer Scotty Richardson and attempted murder of Officer Travis Griffin. At last word, Stephon Carter (pictured at right) was being treated at a hospital in Augusta after being shot in the buttocks in the gunfight.

    1. Stephen Carter MURDER an innocent man who had a family. Mr. Richardson was law abiding officer doing his job to protect the community. Yes it is a shame that Mr. Carter's life was ruined before he was old enough to know better. His grand parents probably did the best they could. But let's not excuse evil. Let's not allow evil to continue. Mr. Carter--he should get the death penalty for killing an innocent man--who by the way---his children are now fatherless because of Carter. Evil is Evil.

  4. When someone shoots an innocent, has a cold heart. I mourn for the Heroic police officer who gave his life in the line of duty and the mother who tried to make a difference in raising her son. These two men shouldnt have the possibility of parol. I guess eye for an eye, and tooth for a tooth has gotten soft. These two men deserve to die for their evil crimes. If they get let loose on parol then the system is flawed and soft. If thats the case, criminals will they they can get away with murder, literally!

  5. WOW that would be so easy for everyone..... YOU can not blame ANYONE for a persons actions.... YOU YOURSELF is the only person that can control on your actions..... Yes it does sound like Stephon Carter had a rough life growing up... But if that is the case then everyone that comemets a crime can always fall back on WELL the reason I does this IS....... NO I pray this he will be fine and will have to suffer the rest of his life for what he has done.... He should have to know and be aware of what he did..... I don't feel sorrow for him NONE at all... I pray for this poor wife and kids that has to frow up now without there husband and daddy.... God will make both of these men answer to what they have done...... God Bless this Family.....

    1. Mr. Richardson was a young innocent man doing his job to protect the community. He could have easily went the other way and became evil. Everyone has choices to make in life. Carter chose to kill a police officer. Now, Richardsons children are fatherless. No chance of them ever even seeing their father in their lifetime. So, I do hope they will give Carter the death penalty. He is evil. He murdered an innocent man.

  7. IloveyouStephon. For anyone that has anything to say about the situation that's goin' on needs to mind their own business and can shut the fuck up. Y'all have no clue what it feels like to have your cousin in the hospital and goin' through what he's goin' through. The police really need to get on their job and figure out what REALLY happened that night and get the stories straight. But, this goes for anyone that has anything negative to say. Fuck youuuu. We love you, Stephon. We have your back 100% over anything and anyone. Thanks, "Anonymous." No sin is greater that the next.

    1. You sound so intelligent! It sounds as if you learned your speech from a very well respected Ivey League School. I only wish people of your mentality could join Stephon in jail and ultimately a resting place right beside him. What a miserable TROLL you must really be.

  8. Both families need and deserve pray. We are all sinners and fall short of god's glory. We are born into sin and shapen into iniquity. God has his purpose. I am sincerely sorry for everyone in this tragedy.

  9. Our young people are americas new terrorists, so much as correcting their wrong could cost you your life. All we can do is pray, something many of us dont do until tragic hits home. My condolences go out to all that suffers from the loss of this senseless crime and know that God will get you through this terrible time.

  10. During the trial proceedings one can only hope that one of his fellow dirt-bag inmates will stomp his brains out, what little he may have.

  11. Stephon Carter is nothing but an ugly disgusting piece of dog shit that deserves nothing less than to be taken out back and have his throat cut.....and the sooner the better.

  12. Does it surprise anyone that Stephon Carter was a cold hearted kller? Sounds like his crime makes others want to do to him what he has done. Maybe hatred was his thoughts when his mother was murdered by his father. And as we all know hatred and vengeance is not the answer. So when we wish death upon another what are we really revealing about ourselves? You cant stop the violence if violence is also your solution. God bless this cold hearted world.

  14. why are there so many people trying to defend this piece of crap.... to the person who said "Y'all have no clue what it feels like to have your cousin in the hospital and goin' through what he's goin' through" wth do you think the officers family is feeling. i don't believe its a race thing i believe your cousin would have shot the officer if they were purple green black or white. i feel no remorse for this young man i feel saddened for your family. but i mourn the loss of the officer.

  15. Some of yall are true jerks! Stephon is a human being just like everybody else. He is not a piece of crap and he is not somebody that needs to get his throat cut! Were any of yall at the crime scene? Did yall see what happened? NO! ITS sad that we lost an officer ok but now he is resting in peace all the BS that yall ignorant people are saying is not going to bring him back. Remember that officer Richardson lost his life on the line of duty also people. WHEN HE CHOOSE TO BE A HERO TO THE COMMUNITY HE ALSO CHOOSE TO TAKE THE RISK OF BEING INJURED OR KILLED! ALL OFFICERS TAKE THAT OATH. May he rest in peace and let our father have one of his children back in his arms, but at the same time lets not talk about Stephon like that. Innocent until proven guilty so hush with ignorant racism because thats what it is and thats no secret

  16. The problem that nobody sees is this a GODS child. You all can say what you feel about this young man but you are merely putting yourself in a situation you don't have to comment on. What is to be said for all the cops that are slimes and getting away with murdering ppl daily? I have no remorse for killing at all but to pray each day that things get better. God did not put anyone on this earth to be crooked but its all over this earth. You will never know a persons true thoughts. So since no one knows Stephon's please speak on prayer instead of speaking sin that will not get you to Heaven, thanks ;-)prayers go out to both families

  17. Here is the way I see it and the information I found out through "digging in the trench" investigative work. Stephon Carter was a boy that was trying to turn his life around. The test just may have come to soon for him. Nobody is saying "accused" or innocent until proven guilty in this young man's corner. It seems public opinion has this boy already guilty. Well about about physical evidence. I was told by sources that the bullets don't even match the gun seized from Stephon Carter. Has it ever occurred to you why a man would shoot an officer of the law to death if all he would have gotten is some prison time not the death penalty on his heels? Seems like to me that is not a rational or sound state of mind. Did it ever occur to anyone that the manner in which Officer Richardson approached Stephon Carter was not of a procedural dealing with a violent offender? In other words proper police standards for approaching this situation was not handled correctly. Just a few things to think about.

  21. I have known Stephon for years, and I am sad that his life is basically over. BUT, there is no comparison between that sadness and what I feel for the officer's family. Reading these ignorant posts disturbed me greatly. To his "cousin"- your foul language makes you look like an idiot straight off jerry Springer. And to everyone who speaks of God, read the Bible. People get punished in the Bible in ways far worse than what we can do, and it was considered acceptable and even mandatory by God. Police officers choose to protect and serve. What they face is a bunch of people who behave like wild animals with no ability to think. I'm tired of you cussing, drug abusing, criminal idiots calling punishment racism. Sit somewhere and shut up. You make the rest of us look bad.

  22. I don't think Stephon should get the death penalty because at the end of the day, the killings hasn't stopped.. He has to be held accountable for his actions if the bullets came from the gun seized from him. The way the police approached him really doesn't matter because obviously he was familiar with Stephon from previous accounts. I hope & pray that justice be served but death shouldn't be an option.. Vegeance is the Lords!! I pray that God send comfort & understanding to all families involved...

  23. I can only say that all of the individuals in this commentary making such comments that Stephon is a good person, we all miss him, etc. etc. are nothing more than a bunch of degenerates and vermin. My hope, desire, and prayer is that Stephon will ultimately meet his maker straight from the death house in Columbia, South Carolina. It would be nice to send enough electricity through him to light up the State of South Carolina. To all the people that is for true justice being sought after; Thanks. To the people who wish Stephon well; Go straight to Hell with him. Hell is the only place for him and for the one's that wish him well and agree with his convoluted mentality.
