Elderly Woman Spends Night in Jail for Bad Check

An elderly North Augusta woman spent last night in jail because she couldn't make $511 bond for a bad check.

Mary Brown, 78,
was arrested at 11 a.m. yesterday by a sheriff's deputy and charged with one count of fraudulent check. Unable to make bond, she was forced to stay in jail overnight.

Ms. Brown is accused of passing a bad check written for under $500. She remains in jail this morning.

According to jail records, she's the oldest person being held at the detention center. The only other person over 70 is a 73-year-old man being held on arson and assault charges.

  1. My God! Sex offenders are out on the streets and North Augusta is arrresting a 78 year old lady for a bad check. What did she write the check for food, medicine, to keep her lights on? Probably some cracked out child or grandchild that threatened her. Do a little investigating and let this poor old lady go.

  5. Pure and simple, age is irrelevent. The woman is a thief.

  6. It is really sad if she was just trying to make ends meet. The government seems to keep all the baby momma's housed and fed, when it should be for the elderly and handicap. I worked for the housing authority and 95% of the tenants are young females with children from several baby daddy's.

  7. Save the money on those fake nails and pay your bills lady. She is right where criminals like her belong, in jail. I get tired of paying the way for losers no matter what the sex or age.

  8. Let me get this straight. One of you want to volunteer to up and bail this woman out of jail without knowing any of the back story or events leading up to her arrest. You just assume she is innocent because she is old as crap?

  9. To the person who wants to bail this woman out? WHY? Why do you want to up and just bail this woman out knowing NOTHING about the events leading up to her arrest or what her intent and motives were. Just because she is OLD?

  10. The fake nails & hair comment is out of line. That is the woman's natural hair and we can't see her nails. Stop making assumptions! Your probably paying more for her to be in jail! She is now entitled to free medical, housing and food.

  11. If only the article/report had mentioned what she had written the check for. That simple fact could make a big difference. However, at the age of 78, worst scenario, house arrest would have sufficed.
