Speed a Significant Factor in Aiken County Fatality

Marcus Bass, 24, of Warrenville, was killed and a passenger in his vehicle was injured this morning after a speed-related wreck on Highway 421 near Gentry Hill Road, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Mr. Bass, pictured above, was featured on this blog in September after he was arrested for having more than one driver's license and driving with an open container.

Witnesses say Mr. Bass was trying to pass another car around 8 a.m. today in his 2000 Ford Expedition, lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, struck several trees and was partially ejected through the sunroof. He was not wearing his seatbelt.

The coroner says Mr. Bass was pronounced dead at the scene. The unidentified passenger was also unbelted and was transported to Medical College of Georgia.

"Speed appears to be a significant factor in this crash. This is the 35th fatal crash in Aiken County in 2009," Mr. Carlton said.

The crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office. Toxicology is pending.
