Female Burglar in Aiken County

Aiken County authorities busted a Jackson women for burglary this week.

Amanda Hays, 21, was charged with three counts of burglary and one count of grand larceny. While she isn't the first woman to be arrested for burglary, we found it unusual to see a woman charged with multiple counts.

And that brings us to a related topic. With the recession and economic downturn, wouldn't you think burglaries would be on the rise in most areas? According to The New York Times, just the opposite is the case.

More people are staying home during the day and going out less often at night. That means burglars have fewer chances to burglarize homes.

Two examples the newspaper cited in the November 2009 story:
  • In St. Louis County, Mo., burglaries are down 35 percent in 2009.
  • In Minneapolis, they’re down 15 percent. There was a 14 percent falloff in Phoenix.
Thinks that make you go hmmmmmm.
