Gotcha! Arrest in Aiken Murder

An Aiken man was arrested Wednesday night in last week's shooting death of Donald McCalla on Abbeville Avenue.

Freddie Simpkins, 20 (above), is charged with murder, two counts of assault with intent to kill and possession of a pistol during the commission of a crime.

Aiken public safety officials responded to Abbeville Avenue at 8 p.m. on September 8 to investigate a report of gunfire. Soon after, they were called to the emergency room, where Mr. McCalla had been taken. According to Coroner Tim Carlton, the victim died of multiple gunshot wounds to the upper and lower parts of his body.

The suspect was arrested at home and transported to the Aiken County Detention Center, where he remains this morning.

Mr. Simpkins has been arrested before. As a teenager in 2007, he was charged with possession of a bomb, assault & battery by a student and possession of marijuana.
