Shoplifters - When Do We Say Enough?

When do we say enough is enough?

The Jail Report asks that question based on the arrest of Lillian Jeffers-Elam, a 47-year-old North Augusta woman who was charged this afternoon with shoplifting -11th offense.

We had to call the Aiken County Jail to confirm that charge. We asked again to make sure.

"11th offense?" we asked.

"Yes, 11th offense," the jailer said.

In she's convicted, we hope the judge on this case sends Lillian a message that shoplifting will not be tolerated. Retailers report that shoplifting has a significant effect on their bottom line.

Experts estimate that shoplifting costs U.S. retailers $25 million a day. That costs is always passed on to the rest of us who actually pay for our merchandise.
